West Bengal to have mobile handset manufacturing facility Kolkata, Nov. 20 (PTI)

West Bengal is all set to join the mobile boom with a cellphone manufacturing unit being set up here within a year.

The plan has been conceptualised by city entrepreneur Sanjoy Kumar Ghosh, who is currently engaged in the two-way radio communication manufacturing business.

"We are planning to set up a mobile manufacturing unit here in the next 12 months. We have tied up with our Chinese partner Shenzhen HYT Science & Technology Co Ltd," said Ghosh, the Managing Director, Simoco Telecommunications (South Asia) Ltd.

"The investment for the manufacturing unit will be between Rs 50 and Rs 60 crores. Initially, we are concentrating on GSM handsets, but will later introduce CDMA handsets. Our partner is a major player in both GSM and CDMA handsets," he said.

HYT is a contract manufacturer for several global mobile handset brands.

At present only Nokia has firmed up a plan to produce mobile handsets in India at Chennai, while, LG also plans to get into handset manufacturing in the country.

Till now manufacturing of handsets was limited to the western and and southern region. Simoco is the first company to express its intention to set up a mobile manufacturing unit here.

Russian mobile handset retailer Euroset denies ?minimizing? taxes

MOSCOW, Nov 14 (Prime-Tass) -- Russia?s largest mobile handset retailer Euroset has officially denied that "it used various schemes to 'minimize' tax payments and that it used fly-by-night companies in its activities," Euroset said in a press release dated November 11, citing the company's President Eldar Razroyev.

The statement was made following an article published by Vedomosti business daily on November 11, which cited a report prepared by KPMG auditing company.

"As the article contains false information, compiled of phrases taken out of context from a confidential document, we plan to hold an investigation, probably calling in law enforcement bodies," Razroyev said.

Euroset suggested that the article published by Vedomosti was paid for by unfair competitors, saying it was "sponsored," and connected its timing to an upcoming U.S. $150 million Eurobond offering.

"It has been initiated by people who are unhappy with Euroset's achievements and are trying to obstruct the company's plans," Euroset said in the press release.

On November 11, Vedomosti said citing Euroset?s annual financial report for 2004 audited by KPMG that Euroset used non-affiliated companies in order to ?minimize? tax payments in 2004.

The report was attached to a preliminary prospectus on a $150 million Eurobond offering planned by Euroset?s parent company Dutch-registered Dalnink Holding NV.

The ?minimization? mechanism may result in back tax claims, KPMG said, as cited by Vedomosti.

Euroset has about 2,400 outlets in Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine.

Euroset's sales were at $970 million in 2004 and are projected to total $2.2 billion in 2005.

Russian businessmen Timur Artemyev and Evgeny Chichvarkin control the retailer through a chain offshore companies.

Nokia boosts handset production in China
Thu Dec 1, 2005 6:37 AM ET

By Laura Vinha

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Top mobile phone maker Nokia will expand its handset production in China to boost capacity and flexibility to meet fast-growing worldwide demand, particularly from Asia, it said on Thursday.

The Finnish company said it would nearly double the floor space at its factory in Dongguan, with production from the expansion to begin in the third quarter of next year.

The plant currently employs 1,100 people, and Nokia would hire another 800 staff as the expansion moves into full swing, Nokia spokeswoman Eija-Riitta Huovinen said.

She said the company would invest about $14 million in the expansion, but declined to give details of the capacity of the plant.

"It's quite significant, because space-wise it will almost double the area," she added.

Nokia is the market leader in China, the world's biggest mobile market, and employs nearly 6,000 people there.

China has about 380 million subscribers currently and about 100 million handsets are sold there each year.

Nokia expects China to add another 250 million subscribers by 2010, but it faces fierce competition from U.S.-based Motorola and local rivals.

It sold 23 million handsets in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau in the first nine months of 2005, up 77 percent from the year-earlier period.

The company recorded total sales of $3.3 billion in those markets in the January-September period, and exported $2.3 billion of goods out of China from its four manufacturing sites in the mainland over the same period.

Nokia says it has invested more than $2.2 billion in China over the past 20 years and is the largest exporter in the Chinese mobile telecoms industry.

The group has nine mobile handset plants globally and said it expects its Chennai plant in India to be operational in the first half of 2006.

Q3 global wireless handset sales up 22% yoy

?
Worldwide mobile phone sales totaled 205.4mn units in the third quarter of 2005, translating into a 22% jump from the same period last year, according to Gartner, Inc. This is the biggest quarter on record since Gartner started tracking the market on a quarterly basis in 2001, the international technology research firm said on Tuesday. This, combined with an expected strong fourth quarter, has forced Gartner to lift its worldwide mobile handset sales forecast to 810mn units in 2005.

"Year on year sales grew in all regions as replacement sales in mature markets such as Western Europe and North America continued to drive growth while users in emerging markets joined mobile networks and acquired their first mobile device", said Carolina Milanesi, Principal Analyst for mobile terminals research at Gartner, based in Egham, UK.

In the July-September quarter of 2005, Nokia delivered another solid performance at a worldwide level with Western Europe and Asia Pacific making up for North America and Latin America, where sales were weaker. During the quarter under review, Nokia started shipping 10 new devices, 5 for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) markets and five for the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) market.

TI's new 3G chip to cut handset prices
By Reuters
Published: November 29, 2005, 6:00 AM PST

Texas Instruments, the top cell phone chipmaker, introduced on Tuesday a high-speed wireless chip for use by a wider set of mobile handset makers, especially in advanced Asian markets.

The chip is based on W-CDMA (wideband code division multiple access), a technology that can support features such as mobile video and Web and has been gaining ground in Europe and parts of Asia. The chip pits TI against rivals such as Qualcomm and Freescale Semiconductor.

TI developed the chip with Japan's top mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo. Analysts expect the association with DoCoMo to help Texas Instruments win business with DoCoMo's suppliers.

The move into standard W-CDMA chips by TI--currently leader in the W-CDMA chip market with custom-designed products--could help reduce the price of advanced phones based on W-CDMA, also known as third-generation (3G) technology.

"Overall, we estimate total handset cost savings can be anywhere between 10 to 30 percent," TI Vice President Alain Mutricy told a news conference in Tokyo.
