Power Over Ethernet: A Global Market Demand Analysis
Report
This study provides estimates, forecasts and analysis of the current and emerging PoE markets including shipments of PoE ASICs, PoE-enabled power sourcing equipment and powered devices.
This study provides estimates, forecasts and analysis of the current and emerging PoE markets including shipments of PoE ASICs, PoE-enabled power sourcing equipment and powered devices. Among the key features of this report are:
PoE-enabled device unit and port unit estimates and forecasts;
Detailed profiles of key PoE industry participants; and
Comprehensive framework for analyzing likely next-generation PoE-enabled devices.
On June 12, 2003, IEEE ratified the PoE standard 802.3af. This standard defined key methods of sending, transmitting and receiving clean, reliable power signals over standard Ethernet cables carrying packetized voice or data.
PoE fundamentally changes the way that certain lower-power consumption electronic devices are powered. Consider the VoIP and wireless LAN access point markets. PoE enables these devices to be installed with only one wire needed versus two for standard installations of similar equipment. PoE can drive compelling ROI for users of certain types of equipment in a wide range of installation environments. Advanced PoE power management systems enable cost savings that include:
Installation materials and services; and
Reduced downtime.
PoE is likely to change many more computing, control and communications market segments during the next 5 years. This study takes a detailed look at the segments, their requirements and the opportunities available to suppliers of PoE-enabling technologies, power-sourcing equipment and powered devices.

The quality of this report is based on the strength of VDC's methodology. Our 33 years of market research and consulting experience allows us to design robust methodologies that yield the most valuable analyses and insights for our clients. To produce these reports, the following methodology was used:
Web-Based Survey - VDC distributed questionnaires to 1,000 OEMs and end users involved with specifying or purchasing Power Over Ethernet-related products.
Primary Research - Structured, in-depth telephone interviews with Presidents, CEOs and key managers of product development, marketing and engineering at forty-five companies participating in the PoE-enabling technology, power-sourcing equipment and power device segments. Market segmentation and forecasts for Power Over Ethernet-related products are presented within the following framework:
All market estimates and forecasts represent supplier shipments to their first level of distribution;
Forecasts address changes in the current PoE market (VoIP phones and wireless LAN access points) as well as new segments likely to develop based on PoE technology and market development;
Suppliers of PoE-enabling technology, power sourcing equipment and powered devices;
Identification and definition of OEM customer requirements and preferences for enabling their solutions with PoE; and
Analysis and discussion of PoE industry structure and development.
Extensive Secondary Research - VDC also used secondary research to develop and cross-check our findings - including economic, historical, and statistical information compiled from technical and business literature, government, trade association, professional society, corporate, and industry reports. Sources included Manufacturer Product Information - catalogs, data books, application notes, sales literature, product press releases; Manufacturer Financial Information - annual reports, 10-K and 10-Q statements, and financial press releases; and Trade Press - including magazine articles on new products, applications, and trends.
