Following a highly challenging 2005, trading conditions for music & video retailers deteriorated further in 2006. The continued pressures of price deflation and weakening underlying demand for CDs and DVDs caused the market's value to fall by 7.6% over the year making it the worst performing sector by a considerable margin. While piracy will continue and CD volumes will decline further, most retailers are better placed to cope with market challenges. Many weaker players have fallen from the market, market leader HMV has invested heavily in its online offer and upgrading its store estate, and digital downloading is starting to pick up pace and has much potential. In the short term we expect next generation DVD will help stabilise the market. Though HD-DVD and Blu-ray are unlikely to cause a massive surge in sales to the extent DVD did when they hit the mass market, they will provide a stimulus, as hardware and software prices fall to mass market levels and more titles become available.
