Research and analysis highlights
In most markets in Western Europe and North America, consumer broadband access has passed the 'innovators' and 'early adopters' phases, having reached the 'early majority'. Aggressive marketing campaigns and competitive pricing programs mean that the technology is now living up to the hype it received for so long.
With lowering prices, broadband uptake is currently in its most rapid period of adoption and its penetration is now greater than narrowband in many markets. Datamonitor believes that mature markets will approach a broadband saturation level of around 60% household penetration.
With DSL systems, and ADSL in particular, generally at very affordable price levels, it may prove difficult for other technologies to compete unless they can offer significant additional benefits. The Swedish market is proving the most successful at consumer broadband innovation, with fiber-to-the-home services beginning to gain a critical mass.
