Espicom's generics company reports will help you to understand the dynamic and complex issues affecting the business of leading generic industry players. These informative reports provide an insight into the company, covering the structure of the business, the most recent quarterly and annual financial results, information on the company's active product lines and ANDA approvals, along with a review of major developments, such as M&A activity, strategic alliances, and litigation. Teva is the largest generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world. The company is Israeli-owned and headquartered, although 60% of revenues are gained in the USA, through the Teva Pharmaceuticals USA subsidiary. Europe accounted for around 24% of revenues in 2006.
In July 2005, Teva announced a merger with IVAX, one of the USA's leading generic companies. The acquisition was completed in January 2006, in a deal worth some US$7.4 billion. The deal strengthens Teva's position in the USA and Latin America.
The IVAX purchase follows a previous major deal. In November 2003, Teva announced the purchase of the US manufacturer, Sicor, for US$3.4 billion. This was the largest deal in the generic drug industry at the time. It gives Teva access to Sicor's generic injectable products and biosimilar development capacity.
While the bulk of Teva's revenues are derived from generics, the company has one major innovative product, Copaxone. This is a treatment for multiple sclerosis. Copaxone accounts for around 17% of Teva's total revenues. A second innovative product, Azilect (rasagiline, Parkinson's disease), was launched in 2006. Teva is also involved in research in other areas such as drug delivery and biosimilars.
Teva was one of the final candidates in 2007 to acquire the generic businesses of Merck KGaA. However, the final round of bidding was won in May 2007 by Mylan Laboratories. Teva responded by issuing a press release, stating that although Merck's business would have been a strategic fit for it, the deal presented did not fully meet its investment criteria.
