Carestream Health, based in Rochester, New York, USA, is a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of imaging and information technology products and services for the medical, dental, molecular imaging research and non-destructive testing industries. The company used to be part of Eastman Kodak but was established as Carestream Health in May 2007 after Kodak's Heath division and its non-destructive testing operations were acquired by an affiliate of the Canadian company, Onex Corporation.
The bulk of Carestream Health represents the previous Kodak Health business, which accounted for 19% of Eastman Kodak's total revenue in fiscal 2006. Kodak has first announced it was exploring strategic alternatives for its Health Group in May 2006. While the unit was experiencing strong organic growth in elements of its digital portfolio such as digital capture and healthcare IT, Kodak had observed consolidation in the healthcare imaging industry for some time. Given its valuable assets and the changing market landscape, the company felt this was the right time to investigate strategic alternatives for the operations.
While its digital imaging products are the company's strongest growth driver, Carestream claims to hold the number one position in the US$3.5 billion market for medical film products that includes film-based radiology systems, digital laser imaging systems for printing patient medical images and mammography systems for detecting breast cancer.
The company aims to further develop its healthcare and dental IT products, enabling it to serve small clinics, large hospitals, and regional and national healthcare programmes with scalable solutions that enable growth and connectivity. In addition, Carestream is currently developing new digital imaging systems and related software products.
Another important business is Carestream's Molecular Imaging Systems group, which develops and markets digital imaging systems, imaging agents, film and accessories for life science research and the drug discovery and development market. The division has recently introduced several new imaging systems and related software, as well as its first line of contrast agents. This move has expanded Carestream's presence in the life science research market, while strengthening the company's position to enter the future clinical molecular imaging market.
