Hoya Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, specialises in optical solutions for information technology, vision care and medical devices. In fiscal 2005, ended 31st March 2005, Hoya achieved strong operating results, with sales up by 14% to ¥308.2 billion (US$2.5 billion) and net income up by 62% to a record ¥64.1 billion (US$599.4 million). Hoya has over 13,700 employees and operations in 24 countries worldwide.
Hoya engages in three fields of business: Information Technology, Eye Care and Lifestyle Refinement. Within these business segments, Hoya's products and services are organised in six divisions: Electro-Optics; Photonics; Vision Care; Health Care; Crystal; and Service.
Information Technology - includes the Electro-Optics and Photonics divisions
Eye Care - includes the Vision Care and Health Care divisions
Lifestyle Refinement - includes the Crystal and Service divisions.
Hoya's medical device activities are mainly concentrated in the Health Care division which offers contact lenses and intraocular lenses (IOLs) and also operates a network of 124 Eye City retail stores in Japan selling contact lenses. Hoya claims to be the market leader in contact lenses in Japan with a 10% market share. In fiscal 2005, sales in Hoya's Health Care division rose by 11% to ¥31.4 billion, driven by high-function products such as bifocal contact lenses and soft intraocular lenses, both in Japan and international markets. Hoya's Health Care business remains a largely domestic concern, with sales in Japan representing 97.7% or ¥30.7 billion of the Health Care division's sales, although, as a result of efforts to expand overseas, international revenue increased from ¥238 million to ¥716 million. The sales growth also led to improved operating profit for the division, which rose by 14% to ¥7.1 billion for the year.
Hoya also offers a range of medical and dental lasers through a US subsidiary, Hoya ConBio, part of the Photonics business. With corporate headquarters in Fremont, California, Hoya ConBio claims to be among the world's leading manufacturers of solid-state lasers. Hoya ConBio has additional offices in France and Japan and worldwide international distributors.
Currently, Hoya's two principal fields of business are the Information Technology and Eye Care segments. With Hoya's Crystal business declining year upon year, Hoya's objective is to develop a new third line of business that capitalises on Hoya's proprietary technology. In addition, it aims to acquire new business infrastructure through mergers and acquisitions.
