Part of the Royal Philips Electronics Group, Philips Medical Systems is a leader in many of the markets in which it participates. The company operates in over 63 countries and distributes its products in more than 100 countries globally. Its manufacturing is mainly based in the US, although the company also produces products in Europe and through a joint venture in China.
Philips' medical operations are based within three main business areas, as follows:-
Imaging Systems - Including X-ray, MRI, CT and nuclear medicine. This is Philips Medical Systems' largest business, accounting for 40% of sales in 2006.
Information, Ultrasound and Monitoring Solutions - Patient monitoring, ultrasound systems, defibrillators and other cardiac care technologies; healthcare informatics such as picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) and other information systems; and medical transcription services through MedQuist, a company in which Philips has a majority shareholding. These activities represented 33% of Philips Medical Systems' revenue in 2006.
Customer Services - supporting workflow and maintenance in all markets served.
While acquisitions have played a part in the development of Philips' medical operations over the past year, organic growth has been the main factor driving the business. The company has launched many new products to support future sales growth, including Gemini TF, the first time-of-flight CT/PET system, which uses atomic particle time measurements to track gamma rays in order to improve image quality and consistency, while increasing the number of patients that can be examined. Philips is also making changes to its global operations to lower costs and expand into emerging markets, and has several key R&D projects in place, many of which are focused on molecular imaging and in vivo diagnostics.
