cancer, HIV and haematology. Its core strengths involve the application of chemistry, biochemistry and biology in order
to generate small molecules with therapeutic potential.
AnorMED was incorporated on 5th January 1996 by a team of seven scientists led by Dr Michael Abrams and Dr
Geoffrey Henson, both of whom worked together from 1985 as integral members of the biomedical research group of
Johnson Matthey (JM). This group was dedicated to the discovery and preclinical development of metal-based
pharmaceuticals. In 1995, JM decided to focus its pharmaceutical related business on core activities involving the
development and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients. This decision provided AnorMED's research team,
led by Abrams, with the opportunity to establish and lead an independent entity focused solely on the expansion of the
drug discovery and development activities formerly undertaken by the biomedical research group of JM. AnorMED
commenced operations on 1st April 1996.
