Founded in early 1993, Millennium Pharmaceuticals is a leading biopharmaceutical company, focused on the discovery and development of small-molecule, biotherapeutic (antibodies and proteins) and predictive medicine products. The company's goal is to provide personalised and precise medicine by integrating breakthrough therapeutic products and predictive medicines.
Millennium primarily focuses its research, development and commercialisation activities in three key disease areas: oncology, cardiovascular and inflammatory. In the oncology field, Millennium focuses its R&D efforts on agents that have the potential to extend survival, improve the quality of life and be less toxic than currently available treatments. Through its genomics platform and understanding of tumour biology, Millennium hopes to discover and develop novel therapies that impact critical pathways involved in the origination, proliferation and survival of cancer cells. The company believes that the classes of drugs with the greatest long-term potential are those targeting signal transduction and apoptosis. Its oncology programmes are primarily concentrated on the treatment of both solid and haematological tumours including: pancreatic, colorectal, lung, prostrate, breast and ovarian cancers, plus multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and acute myelogenous leukaemia.
Millennium seeks to improve cancer therapy by developing a series of treatments that target key pathways on which cancer cells depend. The therapeutics that it is developing include proteasome inhibitors, kinase-mediated signalling inhibitors, therapeutic antibodies and DNA targeting agents. To achieve this, Millennium applies its research and development capabilities to identify and characterise key pathways and to develop novel drugs that induce beneficial changes in their activity. As it develops these drugs, the company plans to explore innovative designs for clinical trials and use its understanding of relevant pathways and targets, or intervention points within those pathways to optimise multiple drug therapies.
