Seattle Genetics (SG) was incorporated on 15th July 1997 and began operations in January 1998 with private financing. In March 1998, the company completed an in-licensing agreement with Bristol-Myers Squibb that covered extensive intellectual property rights in the field of antibody (Ab)-targeted therapy for cancer. The agreement provided the company with a number of patents and an immediate product pipeline for clinical testing and development. Included in the agreement were rights to several monoclonal Abs (MAbs) with specificity for tumours, novel ribosome inactivating proteins, novel linkers for protein/drug conjugation and various enabling technologies. In addition, the licensing agreement provided SG with significant amounts of GMP-produced clinical material for two different MAb-based therapeutic agents to enter clinical trials.
