China's position in the global PMP market. China's overseas PMP shipments are expected to increase by at least 20 percent in 2007. This uptrend mirrors the surge in worldwide shipments, with 2007 figures forecast to reach 117 million units from 58 million PMPs in 2006.

The main export market for PMPs from China is Europe. Secondary markets include the United States, the Middle East and Asia. The bulk of shipments to these regions constitute OEM orders, followed by ODM projects. Many companies are increasingly pursuing own-brand manufacturing (OBM), but this will remain a secondary business as makers try to meet strong OEM demand for PMPs worldwide.

The following are some of the key trends we see in China's PMP industry:
- PMP prices will decline as a result of decreasing costs, particularly of hard disks and flash memory, and heightened competition within and beyond the region. Export prices of flash PMPs will slide by as much as 10 percent. Prices of hard disk drive (HDD) PMPs will decline between 3 percent and 5 percent.
- Flash PMPs will continue to dominate China's shipments, but niche markets will sustain HDD PMP production and exports.
- Emphasis on product development to enable product differentiation is expanding the storage capacity of new models, regardless of storage medium. High-end flash PMPs now boast as much as 4GB capacity. Some HDD PMPs can have as much as 160GB storage capacity.
- New releases also feature larger screens. An increasing number of PMPs use touch-screens for enhanced user interface.
- Trends toward feature integration will fast-track the incorporation of multiple formats, digital cameras, radios and games. Makers will also bolster wireless connectivity through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

This report covers the two major types of PMPs produced in China: flash PMPs and HDD PMPs. Flash PMPs comprise models with built-in flash memory and/or built-in flash memory card readers. HDD PMPs have built-in HDDs and may also include models that also feature built-in card readers for memory expansion and data transfer.
