The emerging Carbon Emissions market in the 21st Century has seen an extensive growth, from a purely voluntary market, to one where emissions are now held as key to Europe?s climate strategy. With the onset of the EU Emissions Trading scheme on 1st January 2005, the compliance market within the carbon industry came into fruition and compulsory limits have now been set against certain sectors of industry within EU Member States.

These limits have been allocated to some 12,500 installations within the EU Member States and penalties for non-compliance will be forthcoming for each site. However, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme is currently in its first stages and is therefore subject to change in the future. It is thus necessary for companies to look forward to the future of Carbon Emissions. Companies are now looking at their internal management of processes and the trade of their emissions allowances and structuring a Carbon Management programme for their business.

This report deals with the Carbon Industry from a corporate perspective and will focus on the Carbon Management Strategies that have already been implemented within the EU. It will show case studies of how carbon management has been introduced into corporations within the various industry sectors and has become part of the annual statements within a company. It will also seek to give all companies, within or without the EU Trading Scheme, practical guidance as to how the reduction of carbon emissions as well as the implementation of a Carbon Management Strategy can benefit the business, and how Carbon Management can be used to maximise profits. And finally, the report will look towards the future of the Carbon industry and the prospects for corporate organisations, as well as focusing on the Gleneagles G8 Summit of July 2005, and the outcomes and implications of this event.
