The aim of the German government is to double the share of renewable energies (RE) in the energy supply until 2010 (reference year is 2000). This means a share in the bruto electricity supply of 12,5 %. Medium term aim is a minimum share of RE in the electricity supply of 20 % in 2020, long-term aim is to increase the share to a minimum of 50 % by 2050. The currently relatively high feed-in tariffs have generated a considerable RES market. Offshore wind energy develops slower than expected due to high costs and unsolved technical problems. Biomass development is slower than expected due to fuel price uncertainty and high infrastructure costs. The largest mid-term potentials that are not exploited can be found for wind energy (especially offshore), solid biomass, biogas and photovoltaics, whereas the hydropower potential is almost fully exploited. The rapid development of onshore wind energy will lead to a rather quick utilisation of the respective potential. Current installations of wind power have shifted from the northern part of Germany with very high average wind speeds towards the central part showing moderate wind speeds. Furthermore, the remaining potentials of forestry residues and agricultural residues can be exploited in a rather short time, whereas the potential of photovoltaics will need far longer time to become fully utilised. This report examines the market for green energy in Germany and aims to provide potential investors with relevant data to assess opportunities. Relevant data includes information on the players active in the market, their role and importance as well as clarifications on the key regulations concerning green electricity.
