This report analyses the important contribution that ‘Green ITS’ technologies can play in reducing the environmental impact of vehicles.

The report identifies the role that ITS systems could take in reducing emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases and the trials, tests and deployments that have confirmed their benefits. The report’s focus is on in-vehicle systems and the scope includes autonomous and cooperative systems.

SBD believes that Green ITS technologies have a significant potential to cut emissions of pollutants and green house gases by reducing the impact and causes of congestion. In many cases, however, the
environmental benefits are secondary to the main safety / operational improvements but this balance will shift over time as the environment continues to play an increasingly important part of vehicle design.
SBD also expects Green ITS technologies to become part of the ongoing xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx between the automotive industry and the EC. Future targets will become increasingly difficult to meet using
xxxxxx and xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx and so ITS and the xxxxxxx xxxxxxx that it can enable will become part of the overall solution.

The automotive industry is under constant pressure from the EC and Governments around the world to reduce emissions and to improve fuel economy. These demands have heightened in recent years as
the awareness and concerns surrounding climate change and the
earth’s resources have grown.

Manufacturers have responded by optimising engine and vehicle efficiency but there is a growing realisation that these efforts are starting to hit natural limits and that they will produce diminishing
returns in the future.
