This study is designed to serve as a strategic and tactical planning tool for companies who currently manufacture or resell radio and microwave frequency wireless monitoring, control, and/or networking products for industrial applications, or for companies who are considering entering these markets.
Report Highlights
- Overall dollar shipments of wireless products to North American markets for industrial monitoring and control applications are forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 39.6% over the forecast period.
- Although the IEEE 802.11 standards continue to gain in share, proprietary protocols operating the 900 MHz band maintained the largest share of shipments in 2004. Proprietary networks are often preferred in industrial applications where there is need for longer transmission distances and bandwidth requirements are not high.
- The development of the IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee standards are helping to expand the use of mesh networking in industrial monitoring and control applications. These standards meet the need for low complexity, low cost, low power consumption and low data rate wireless networks.
- Specific requirements of wireless networks are largely application specific. Material handling equipment and tank level monitoring and control held the largest shares of overall shipments.
