Report Highlights
VDC's fifth edition of this research provides detailed analyses and insight into the North American Markets for Industrial Electronic Monitors, Operator Interface Terminals and Software. Highlights from the research include:
- The 2004 North American market for industrial electronic monitors and operator interface terminals totaled $659 million. Shipments are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.4% to $760 million in 2006.
- Vendor 2004 industrial operator interface application software revenues derived from North American markets totaled $244 million. These revenues are expected to reach $281 million in 2006, expanding at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.3%.
- The 2004 market for graphic operator interface terminals was the largest among all the terminal product types under study. This product market also is expected to have the largest growth in terms of dollar volume through 2006. The high demand for graphic terminal products is a result of the shift away from graphic monitors, and to some extent from PC-based solutions.
- In 2004, the largest share of vendor industrial operator interface application software revenues were derived from products which went into end user applications, with a smaller share for OEM & systems integrator applications. However, a major shift is forecast with the share for OEM & systems integrator applications expected to be the largest in 2006.
Report Overview and Scope
This report consists of two volumes; Volume 1 covers monitor and operator interface terminal hardware products, and Volume 2 covers software products.
Each volume provides market sizes, segmentations and forecasts through 2006 for these products; along with the results of an extensive investigation into user needs. Vendor shipments and market shares are presented by types of products, and detailed profiles of major vendors are provided.
Market segmentation and forecasts through 2006 are provided in Volume 1 by application, industry, product type, display features, type of enclosure and distribution channels (sales organizations and customer classes). Volume 2 is segmented by type of software, industry, application, stationary vs. portable, operating systems and distribution channels. The quality of this study is based upon the strength of VDC's methodology. Our 33 years of market research and consulting experience allows us to design robust methodologies that yield the most valuable analyses and insights for our clients. To produce these reports, the following methodology was used:
Structured In-depth Phone Interviews and a Web survey - were conducted with 329 users of industrial electronic monitor and/or operator interface terminal products. Targets included individuals involved with product selection in the major OEM/systems integrator and end user industry and application markets.
Structured in-depth phone interviews - were conducted with 81 vendors of the monitor and operator interface products under study. These were with key personnel including: product managers, marketing managers, directors of marketing, vice-presidents of sales & marketing, and presidents. Multiple interviews and cross-checks were used to help ensure that accurate factory shipment data was collected.
Extensive Secondary Research - Firms offering the operator interface and monitor products under study were contacted to obtain product literature, data sheets, pricing, application notes, and product news releases. Financial information also was requested on the suppliers, such as annual and quarterly reports, 10K statements, and company news releases.
Technical and competitive information was compiled from technical and business periodicals. In addition, VDC used the wealth of relevant information in its own files and previously published reports on operator interface and monitor products to supplement the database for this report.
